About Our Doves
Our doves are well cared for and loved. Their health and safety are our top priority.
Doves are highly intelligent birds. Ours are fed a specially formulated diet to keep them healthy and they live in a clean loft at our home.
They have been trained to return home immediately following their release.
The birds begin training for our release service at an early age. They first fly around their home loft. As they get stronger, they are released at various locations and longer distances on a daily basis. This conditions them and trains them to route home. Many hours are spent to keep the birds safe.
Our doves love to fly. Their daily exercising, outside of their release events, provides them the freedom to take long flights away from home simply because they love flying. When the birds are released at your special event, they are not being forced to do something they don’t enjoy. They love flying and we are proud to share their beauty with you and your guests.
The doves each have their own personal perch within the loft.
The birds are permitted free loft exercise each day (weather permitting). This keeps them in excellent physical condition to make the return flight from their scheduled release locations.
Ceremonial Doves of Tidewater uses only well trained healthy release doves (White Homing Pigeons) for releases.
Their safety and well being is very important to us.
Our birds receive extensive training to enable them to safely return to our home loft after your event. When released, our doves will usually fly directly into the sky, possibly circle and when they have their bearings, return to their home for a healthy feast.

The funeral service of a loved one is a very emotional time. The releasing of white doves at funerals and memorials is a meaningful and touching way of commemorating the life of your loved one. We find ourselves torn between surrendering our loved one’s life and God’s promise of a much better life after death. A dove release gives closure and a sense of enlightenment that the Spirit has lifted and become free.
The ceremony allows for a release of emotion and a sense of peace and healing as the doves ascend into the sky, circle the gravesite and fly away into the heavens.
A beautiful White Dove Release ceremony, as a tribute to your loved one, can be very uplifting and may take place at the cemetery, funeral home or any outside venue.
Ceremonial Doves of Tidewater offer a number of white dove release services.
We can assist you with a dove release for a private memorial, a public tribute, or a meaningful white dove release for your loved one’s funeral, customized to your religious beliefs. We will coordinate all services with your funeral or memorial director, or with you ahead of time, so there is nothing for you to worry about on the day of the service. We will have our dove release equipment set up prior to your arrival at the cemetery and do our best to see that all goes as smoothly as possible.
An Affordable Memorable Gift
This time of mourning can be a difficult time, and trying to find a way to express your sympathy can be equally difficult.
Instead of, or in addition to flowers, a White Dove Release is one of the most memorable gifts to give to a loved one.
Family and friends can give a ‘dove release’ to the family of the deceased.
These releases would normally take place at the conclusion of the graveside or memorial service. The result is a very beautiful ending to the service and a warm memory made for your family and friends.
The Spirit Dove Release
One pure white dove is released by a family member, by hand or basket, as a symbolic tribute to the departed loved one’s spirit leaving the earth and rising up into the heavens.
The Trinity Release – (the most popular)
One Spirit Dove is released by a family member representing the love one’s spirit, followed by three doves representing the Trinity (Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit) or (past, present, and future). The three doves take wing from a basket; join the Spirit Dove, and together in flight, then fly home. This symbolizes the Trinity accompanying of the departed spirit to heaven.
Family members and friends have expressed how comforting it feels to release the dove, how it opens up the grieving process, and how it allows them to say a final farewell and let go.
Service in the Line of Duty Release
This free release is to honor local military, law enforcement and firefighting personnel killed in the line of duty. The White Doves will be released after the
playing of Taps and a moment of silence. This release is subject to the number of doves available and prior scheduling.
We have a variety of Poems and Readings that may be read prior to the release by a Family Member or the Clergy.
A handler in appropriate attire will bring the doves to the service or internment and help arrange the release. If family members choose to hand release the doves, we will assist with this.
Our beautiful white birds are much loved and many hours of training and care assures their safe flight home, following a release. A Dove Release is a unique alternative to a less environmentally friendly release of balloons. For the safety of the birds, doves will not be released in inclimate weather or in less than one hour prior to sunset.
Let us help you cherish the memory of your love one for the rest of your life.
“Oh that I had wings like a dove, I would fly away and be a rest.” –Psalm 55:6

SEE COMMENTS BELOW
Doves mate for life. They symbolize purity, love, fidelity, prosperity and good luck. They are a symbol of peace in every major religion.
They were often used by God as messengers and representatives of the Holy Spirit.
“the heavens were opened and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a
dove and alighting on Him.”
We use the term “dove” symbolically. The birds at Ceremonial Doves are actually White Homing Pigeons; also called White Racing Pigeons, or Rock Doves.
White Ringneck Doves (those normally found in pet stores) are dependent on humans for food. They have no skills to avoid predators, and they are not strong flyers. If released, these birds will most likely end up as a meal for a cat, a hawk, or some other predator. Releasing white Ringneck Doves is cruel and inhumane. Ceremonial Doves of Tidewater releases only well trained white homing pigeons.
Despite their reputation, pigeons are actually very clean animals and there is very little evidence to suggest that they are transmitters of disease.
Ceremonial Doves of Tidewater places the health and safety of our beloved doves first and foremost. For this reason, we adhere to a humane release policy with strict provisions to protect our birds from dangerous circumstances.
How do our doves find their way home?
Homing Pigeons have an uncanny ability that enables them to read the earth’s magnetic fields; in addition to this ability, they have a remarkable memory. They also use their sight, hearing, and possibly even their sense of smell to find their way home from hundreds of miles away.
Racing pigeons trained and conditioned are able to fly more than 500 miles at speeds over 60 mph. Racers can fly for 14-16 hours non-stop.

The Symbolism of a White Dove Release
White doves have been used at weddings since ancient times and are symbolic of celebration, new beginnings, peace, love, unity, serenity and the Holy Spirit. Doves mate for life. They share the responsibility of building a new home, raising their young and facing life’s challenges together.
White Doves are a beautiful representation of the commitment made by the bride and groom. When released, the doves will change from one direction to another. Each will do their part as they fly together. No matter where they are or where they begin, they will always find their way home.
As with the doves, a bride and groom cannot be certain where their journey may take them. Their path may change many times along the way, but with faith, trust and love, they will work together to find their way.
A white dove release is a unique and affordable gift to the Bride and Groom.
Why have White Wedding Doves?
What one thing do you remember from the last wedding you attended?
Imagine the bride and groom each releasing a white dove into the sky symbolizing the beginning of their new life together. As the doves begin to circle together above the wedding party they may be joined by a spectacular flock of additional white doves creating an awesome aerial display before flying home to the loft where they were raised.
Their beauty, as they soar into the sky and circle overhead is truly exciting and breathtaking. Without a doubt, your White Dove Release will create a memory and be one of the most talked about events of your special day.
Your wedding photos will be enhanced with the addition of a dove release.
How it works:
When I am contacted by a customer, I get the name of the Bride and Groom, date, time, location and any other pertinent information. I will discuss how and at what point in the ceremony they would like the release to take pace.
I will send them an agreement to fill out and to be returned with their deposit. The deposit will be refunded if I can’t fly the birds because of weather and if cancelled prior to 30 days of the scheduled release. I explain that I will contact them a week or so prior to the wedding to confirm that nothing has changed.
I arrive at the wedding place an hour before the wedding. I will meet with the Bride and/or her coordinator to go over previous discussed plans and help pick an outside release site considering the safety of my doves. I get with the photographer and briefly explain how the doves will be released so he/she can time his/her shots and get the best photos.
I will set up any equipment that I may need, prior to the bride and Groom coming out. Upon their arrival, I will assist them in getting ready for the release.
As friends and family come out and gather around in front of the couple, I ensure that the photographer is ready. Usually the father of the bride, preacher or coordinator will read a poem and/or explanation of the release (I will provide). When complete, I will hand the doves or a basket to the couple and step out of the picture. They release the two birds and then they open the large basket together and the remaining birds go out usually over the crowd with a lot of ducking and ooohs and aaahs. The doves will gather together and fly off to their home for a feast and family and friends head for the reception.
Let your wedding be the one that everyone remembers and talks about for years to come!

About the Release:
If your wedding is indoors, a dove release on the steps of the church or temple after the ceremony is a beautiful and symbolic alternative to throwing rice, confetti or releasing balloons, all of which are progressively being prohibited due to environmental concerns.. If your ceremony is outdoors, the release can be coordinated at any time you choose such as the kiss after pronouncement. Achieving a beautiful release effect is always our top priority and our expertise will ensure proper placement, timing and coordination with the photographer allowing you to capture this special moment and savor the image forever.
